Orthodontic appliances

At Darwin Orthodontics, we offer a full range of orthodontic appliances designed to support healthy growth, create space, and maintain alignment. These custom-made devices can help children, teens, and adults achieve a straighter smile and can often reduce the need for more complex treatment later on.

Palatal expanders - creating space for developing smiles

For children and teenagers with crowded teeth caused by a narrow upper jaw, palatal expansion can be an effective early treatment. Expanders gently widen the upper dental arch to create more space for teeth to emerge properly.

  • Slow maxillary expansion appliances: Removable devices adjusted gradually.
  • Rapid maxillary expansion appliances: Fixed (cemented) devices that produce results more quickly.

Treatment is typically used for 3-6 months while the jaw is still developing. Within weeks, small gaps may appear between the front teeth - a sign the expander is working as planned.

Removable appliances - addressing simple problems early

Removable appliances are often used from age six onwards to treat simple orthodontic issues, such as a crossbite where the top front tooth bites behind the bottom front tooth. These devices are usually worn for 3-4 months and require consistent use to be effective.

They can also be helpful in discouraging habits such as thumb or finger sucking, giving children a better foundation for future orthodontic treatment.

Retainers - keeping your new smile in place

After braces or aligner treatment, retainers are essential for maintaining results. They hold teeth in their new position while the bone and gums stabilise.

  • Removable retainers: Made of clear acrylic or thin plastic, worn at night or as directed.
  • Bonded retainers: A thin wire fixed behind the teeth for long-term stability.

Most patients need to wear retainers full-time at first, then gradually reduce use to a few nights a week. Consistent wear is the best way to keep your smile looking great for years to come.

Functional appliances - guiding jaw growth

For children and teens with a small lower jaw or developing bite issues, functional appliances can encourage proper growth and positioning.

One example is the Clark Twin Block appliance, which helps guide forward jaw growth and supports normal function. These devices can be removable or fixed and are most effective while children are still growing.
