Common orthodontic questions

At Darwin Orthodontics, we believe no question is too small. Whether you’re considering braces, aligners, or simply want to know how appointments work, we’re here to give you clear, honest answers. Here are some of the most common queries our patients ask us.

Common orthodontic questions

General orthodontic questions

Do I need a referral to see you?

No. You can book directly with Darwin Orthodontics without a referral from your dentist. Many patients are referred by their family dentist, but it’s not essential. We do recommend having a dental check-up before starting orthodontic treatment to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy.

What is the best age to see an orthodontist?

How long will my treatment take?

Will I still need to see my general dentist?

Braces and aligner care

Do braces hurt?

You may experience some mild discomfort after your braces are fitted or after adjustment appointments. This is normal and usually settles within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief can help if needed.

Can I play sports or a musical instrument with braces?

How do I floss with braces?

How should I clean my aligners or retainers?

Appointments and treatment process

How often will I need to visit the clinic?

If you have braces, you’ll usually visit every 6-8 weeks for adjustments. If you’re using clear aligners with Dental Monitoring, we can track your progress remotely and reduce the number of in-person appointments.

What happens if something breaks or feels uncomfortable?

Can I change my treatment option once I start?
